Through the President
Granting of Polish citizenship by decision of the President of the Republic of Poland — the most prestigious route, with no formal requirements regarding length of residence, language proficiency, or income level. The President holds the constitutional right to grant citizenship to any foreigner at his/her discretion. In practice, used for persons with exceptional merits to Poland (science, culture, sport, business, humanitarian activity) or in special life circumstances. The application is filed through the Chancellery of the President — in person, by post, or through the Voivoda of the place of residence, who forwards the documents. Main requirements: justification of exceptionality (documented achievements, letters of recommendation, evidence of connection to Poland), an impeccable biography, no threat to public order. The decision is discretionary, not subject to appeal, and has no defined examination period.
Through the Voivode
Recognition as a Polish citizen by decision of the Voivode — the standard administrative procedure for foreigners long integrated into Polish society. Available after 3 years of legal residence on the basis of a permanent residence card or a long-term EU resident card, 2 years for spouses of a Polish citizen (after 3 years of marriage), 1 year for refugees, and other grounds depending on status. The application is filed at the Voivodeship Office of your place of residence — in person or through ePUAP. Main requirements: appropriate status and period of legal residence, confirmed Polish-language proficiency at B1 level (state certificate or Polish school/university diploma), stable source of income, registered accommodation, documented integration into Polish society. The Voivode's decision can be appealed through administrative procedure.
